DFO presents a variety of programs throughout the year that are informative, educational and fun. Check out the full list below and the descriptions of each program. To sign up for a program, click on the register button and you will be directed to a registration page. Once you fill out the registration form you will be sent a link to the webinar. 

***Annual Membership Meeting***

An asterisk before the date indicates the annual DFO meeting. The results of the election for board directors and officers will be made at this meeting.

Bird Bombs

Bird Bombs are short blasts of bird identification information designed to help you be a better birder. They drop via Zoom about twice a month and are free and open to the public. Find them on the list of Upcoming Programs wherever you see the label BIRD BOMBS before the title. Past Bird Bombs recordings can be found on the Past Programs page in order by date.

Monthly Programs

Meetings of the DFO membership are taking on a different look this year. Four of them will be in person and four will be via Zoom. August 2026 was a member picnic. September 30th features presenter Kate Merewether. October 30 is a volunteer recognition event and costume party at a brewery in Golden. Then November, January, February and March DFO collaborates with Colorado Field Ornithologists on the Dead of Winter Speaker Series. In April we return to an in person event to round out our year.

Volunteer Recognition and DFO Mixer - October 30 Program

The last in person meeting of 2026 will be a casual social gathering at New Terrain Brewing in Golden featuring bird-themed costumes and volunteer awards. Costumes are optional, but prizes will be awarded in four categories:

  • Best Birder Costume - dress for success in the field with all the gadgets you can think of to ensure success
  • Most Impressive Plummage - go for glamour with feathers, color, and patterns of the bird of your dreams
  • Best Cartoon Bird Costume - Tweety, Big Bird, Donald Duck, Road Runner or whatever cartoon bird strikes your fancy
  • Best Realistic Bird Costume - what bird are you? Extra points for depicting the behavior of the species

We will start the evening at 5:30 with a social gathering. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. At 6:30 we will start the awards and prizes.

Dead of Winter Speaker Series

The Dead of Winter Speaker Series is a collaboration with Colorado Field Ornithologists to bring you four webinars with experts in various aspects of birds, birding and avian research. Here is the line up:

  • November 18, 2026: Where the Wild Birds Are with Noah Strycker, associate editor of Birding magazine
  • January 7, 2027: What an Owl Knows with Jennifer Ackerman, NY Time bestselling author
  • February 18, 2027: Flammulated Owl Ecology in an Age of Rapid Change with Kate McGinn, visiting associate professor with Colorado College
  • March 24, 2027: Holiday in Craigmerica: The Grouse Utopia of Colorado with Jeremiah Psiropoulus, owner and operator of Colorado Grouse Tours
