As part of your registration, in order to participate in a Denver Field Ornithologists, Inc. (“DFO”) trip or other activities designated by the Board of Directors, each adult participant and the parent of a minor participant (those under 18 yrs. of age) are required to review and sign (either electronically or manually) a DFO Acknowledgment and Assumption of Risks & Release and Indemnity Agreement (sometimes “Agreement”) Completing this document involves your acceptance of binding contract terms. This online registration system allows you to review and electronically sign the Agreement if you do not have one on file. If you would prefer to manually sign a printable version of the Agreement, you may access it here, and present it to the leader before trip start. If you choose this option, please contact your leader to assure you are signed up for the trip.
Please note: Each person, including each family member choosing to sign the Agreement electronically must login and have a separate account so that the agreement is tied to the individual. If you are having difficulty with multiple logins, please contact us for assistance. *Minors: If participant is a minor, the minor’s parent or legal guardian must print out, review and sign a paper copy of the Agreement and present it to the leader before the trip start. Directions
Meet at the parking lot/cul-de-sac at Heron Pond. Directions: From I-70 take Washington Street exit. Drive north to 54th Avenue and turn right. Go east 2-3 blocks to "T" at Franklin Street. Turn right and go south to 53rd. Turn right again and go 1 block west to parking area / turnaround. From I-25: take 58th Avenue exit, go east to Washington and turn right. Drive south to 54th Avenue. Turn left and follow same directions to Heron Pond.

Habitats to bird: Developed, Riparian
This area of the South Platte River holds interest because there is a spillway of the waste water from a water treatment plant. This means there will be warmth, warm water and food for waterfowl & land birds alike. We will walk the level bike path for 1-2 miles checking waterfowl, gulls, herons and land birds along the banks.
We will carpool to other spots along the South Platte in the area between 78th to the north and Park Avenue to 38th to the South. The meeting point, Heron Pond Natural Area, is not open, however we will meet in the parking lot and carpool to three or four other locations. Plan on between 2 and 3 miles of walking, overall.
Generally we will be on paved paths, however, there might be some bushwacking, the weedy habitat can provide forage and shelter opportunities for passerines. This part of the South Platte is not frequently birded! However the River habitat and development along the River varies, offering good birding opportunities.
The River can be chilly; bring layers of clothing, a snack, binoculars and water, and a camera if you wish. Any questions for the leader, please ask.
