As part of your registration, in order to participate in a Denver Field Ornithologists, Inc. (“DFO”) trip or other activities designated by the Board of Directors, each adult participant and the parent of a minor participant (those under 18 yrs. of age) are required to review and sign (either electronically or manually) a DFO Acknowledgment and Assumption of Risks & Release and Indemnity Agreement (sometimes “Agreement”) Completing this document involves your acceptance of binding contract terms. This online registration system allows you to review and electronically sign the Agreement if you do not have one on file. If you would prefer to manually sign a printable version of the Agreement, you may access it here, and present it to the leader before trip start. If you choose this option, please contact your leader to assure you are signed up for the trip.
Please note: Each person, including each family member choosing to sign the Agreement electronically must login and have a separate account so that the agreement is tied to the individual. If you are having difficulty with multiple logins, please contact us for assistance. *Minors: If participant is a minor, the minor’s parent or legal guardian must print out, review and sign a paper copy of the Agreement and present it to the leader before the trip start. Any minor attending must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.
Logged in users who have a signed Agreement on file will have the opportunity to print or save it at any time. Click on the link to the printable copy and use your browser functions to save or print.

Hawk watch/ Raptors in flight plus Paleontology and Geology. The areas surrounding Dinosaur Ridge (Dakota hogback, North and South Table Mountains, Red Rocks) have a fascinating paleontology and geology. We will discuss these in detail. If you know how to identify most of our Colorado raptors Like Red- tailed Hawk, Swainson's Hawk, and Ferruginous Hawk, and Kestrel, and you want to go to the next level of learning how to identify them in flight, then this is the trip for you. You have a chance to see those species as well as potentially, a total of 17 different raptor species. Of course, raptors migrate in variable numbers per day depending on the winds and other factors we don't really understand, so we cannot guarantee that you will see a number of individuals or species. Local Red-tailed, Turkey Vulture, possibly Golden Eagle may come over the watch, which we would get good looks at and learn the ID features of each. Liza and I will be staying beyond 12:00 o'clock when the trip ends, so if you want to stay longer you are welcome. Bring sunscreen, hat, snacks and plenty of fluids, and lunch if you'd like to stay after noon. There is has been a regular hawk count in spring at Dinosaur Ridge but no fall hawk count in the entire state of Colorado. This year we are doing an exploratory count at Dinosaur Ridge in fall to see what numbers of raptors we get on migration. Last year we did an exploratory count at Mount Zion which is just north of Lookout Mountain and we counted a total of 576 migratory raptors. We recommend that you add the Raptor ID app from Hawkwatch International which is free for both iPhone and Android, especially viewing the videos of the Raptors in flight narrated by Jerry Liguori. This has been designated a moderately difficult trip only because of the walk up to the Hawk watch which can take 20-25 minutes, it is 0.6 miles in length and you climb around 259 feet in elevation. Just take your time walking up, there's no pressure at all to keep up with the group. A hiking pole may be helpful, and good hiking shoes.
