If you choose this option, please contact your leader to assure you are signed up for the trip.
Please note: Each person, including each family member choosing to sign the Agreement electronically must login and have a separate account so that the agreement is tied to the individual. Birds Plus+ History. This overnight trip will combine birding in wonderful Southeastern Colorado with a special visit to the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Kiowa County (see more details below). This overnight trip will include birding on both days and visit the National Historic Site on the second day. Birding will focus on reservoirs with shorebirds and other water birds (good chance for unusual species), and hotspots and prairie lands for migrant land birds. Possible regional specialties include Chihuahuan Raven, Greater Roadrunner, Scaled Quail and Northern Cardinal. The exact itinerary will be decided as the trip approaches, but we expect to bird in some or all of these counties: Kiowa, Prowers, Bent, Crowley and Cheyenne.
We will carpool from the Denver area, and riders should expect to pay mileage reimbursement of about $50 each. We will stay overnight at a hotel in Lamar, and enjoy a group dinner at a restaurant for those who would like to join. The leaders are planning to stay at the Holiday Inn Express; all particiapnts should pick that one or one of the immediately neighboring hotels at the north end of town. Participants are responsible for their own lodging and food costs and hotel reservations for Oct 2. Bring the food and drinks you will need for breakfast on the first day, lunches, snacks; we will have stops at convenience stores. Expect warm weather and lots of sunshine. We will walk up to two miles each day, some off trails through weeds and shrubs.
History overview: On the morning of November 29, 1864, US Army soldiers attacked a Cheyenne and Arapaho chiefs’ village of over 750 people. The Sand Creek Massacre is a story of a broken treaty, greed, cowardice, lust for power, fanaticism, and brutal murder. It is also the story of survival, heroism and, 150 years after the Massacre, repentance. * Web page for Sand Creek Massacre NHS web page: https://www.nps.gov/sand/index.htm * Web page for the Visitor and Education Center located in nearby Eads: https://www.nps.gov/sand/planyourvisit/sand-creek-massacre-visitor-and-education-center.htm
