Trip Registration

As part of your registration, in order to participate in a Denver Field Ornithologists, Inc. (“DFO”) trip or other activities designated by the Board of Directors, each adult participant and the parent of a minor participant (those under 18 yrs. of age) are required to review and sign (either electronically or manually) a DFO Acknowledgment and Assumption of Risks & Release and Indemnity Agreement (sometimes “Agreement”) Completing this document involves your acceptance of binding contract terms. This online registration system allows you to review and electronically sign the Agreement if you do not have one on file. If you would prefer to manually sign a printable version of the Agreement, you may access it here, and present it to the leader before trip start. If you choose this option, please contact your leader to assure you are signed up for the trip.

Please note: Each person, including each family member choosing to sign the Agreement electronically must login and have a separate account so that the agreement is tied to the individual. If you are having difficulty with multiple logins, please contact us for assistance. *Minors: If participant is a minor, the minor’s parent or legal guardian must print out, review and sign a paper copy of the Agreement and present it to the leader before the trip start. Any minor attending must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

Logged in users who have a signed Agreement on file will have the opportunity to print or save it at any time. Click on the link to the printable copy and use your browser functions to save or print.

Habitats to bird: Grassland, Riparian

SE Colorado Birds Plus+ Herps (Reptiles and Amphibians).

This DFO Birds Plus+ trip will search for birds of the Colorado SE as well as searching for some reptiles and amphibians in the same general area. This trip will be two days, with a carpooling departure at 5:00am from the Safeway on the corner of Lincoln Ave & Yosemite (1 mile east of I-25 on Lincoln Ave.).

The area covered will be south of La Junta on the Comanche Grasslands and environs. It will consist mostly of birding in the daytime with a little "herping" (searching for herps). Evening and nighttime will consist of driving roads looking for herps that are on or crossing the road(s). Participants will have the option of staying at one of several motels in La Junta or camping with Joey at the Vogel Canyon picnic area/campground. This is a primitive campground with a National Forrest Service vault toilet and no running water. The next morning (Friday) we will search for more birds and herps and then work our way back to the Lincoln Safeway around 6:00pm.

This trip is labelled “Strenuous” due to early morning start, lots of riding in the car and especially late night searching for herps (if it is a REALLY productive night, we may stay out until midnight or 1am-ish). If you are susceptible to falling asleep in a moving vehicle at night, this is not the trip for you.

The plan is to search for Gray Vireo, Vermilion Flycatcher, Hepatic Tanager, Curve-billed Thrasher, Canyon Towhee, Ladder-backed Woodpecker and other birds. I’m hoping to see at least a few of SE Colorado’s snakes and depending upon recent rains, frogs and toads. A few lizards and turtles are also possible.
