Trip Registration

As part of your registration, in order to participate in a Denver Field Ornithologists, Inc. (“DFO”) trip or other activities designated by the Board of Directors, each adult participant and the parent of a minor participant (those under 18 yrs. of age) are required to review and sign (either electronically or manually) a DFO Acknowledgment and Assumption of Risks & Release and Indemnity Agreement (sometimes “Agreement”) Completing this document involves your acceptance of binding contract terms. This online registration system allows you to review and electronically sign the Agreement if you do not have one on file. If you would prefer to manually sign a printable version of the Agreement, you may access it here, and present it to the leader before trip start. If you choose this option, please contact your leader to assure you are signed up for the trip.

Please note: Each person, including each family member choosing to sign the Agreement electronically must login and have a separate account so that the agreement is tied to the individual. If you are having difficulty with multiple logins, please contact us for assistance. *Minors: If participant is a minor, the minor’s parent or legal guardian must print out, review and sign a paper copy of the Agreement and present it to the leader before the trip start. Any minor attending must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

Logged in users who have a signed Agreement on file will have the opportunity to print or save it at any time. Click on the link to the printable copy and use your browser functions to save or print.

This trip is limited to the first 12 registrations.

Meeting Place: (For this trip only) 146 Windwalker Rd. West on Main St from the light to Rodeo Rd (CR 321), left on CR 321 past the cemetery and left on Windwalker Rd. (Summersong Ranch). Stay to the left at the fork. Tan house is on the left (behind all the trees and bushes) just before the road curves around to the right. Join us in beautiful Buena Vista for a day and a half of birding. We'll visit Chaffee County locations including Hecla Junction/Browns Canyon, Cottonwood Lake, Cottonwood Pass, Frantz Lake, Sands Lake and more. Species of interest include Lewis's Woodpecker, black and white and black throated grey warblers along with others, possible green heron, and many more. Habitats include pinyon/juniper, mountain forest/riparian, high altitude, lakes and marshes. We will be traveling between locations, however this trip is focused on getting out and observing behavior, so plan to spend a good deal of time walking, 3-6 miles per day in 1-2 mile lengths. Minimum altitude is 8,000 ft, up to 12,000+ so this trip is rated strenuous. Bring breakfast and lunch supplies, although we will provide coffee and bagels prior to departure. Also bring binocs/scope, water, sunscreen, insect repellent, hats, good hiking shoes and hiking poles if desired. Most hikes will not include any significant elevation gain. Parking at locations is limited and we will target no more than 3-4 vehicles - we strongly encourage that all participants are fully vaccinated to facilitate car pooling. Locations require state parks pass, fishing/hunting/or SWA pass and a national parks pass. Day passes per vehicle can also be obtained on site. Day passes are approximately $9. We recommend that out of area participants arrive in Buena Vista Friday afternoon/evening. We also invite you to an optional evening prior event for group socializing, Friday Aug 6 - a concert and picnic at the Turner Farm featuring Gene Farrar - entry fee is by donation. Bring chairs or blankets and picnic supplies if you'd like to join us. Participants are responsible for arranging their own lodging. We can recommend the Lakeside Motel. Other options include nearby KOA and other camping/RV sites and a few other local hotels/motels/cabins. We will depart from my home in the mornings. Any lodging within Buena Vista will be within 10-15 minutes of our morning departure location. We are a popular small town and lodging is limited, so reserve a location asap. Register online or contact the leader.
