Meet Colleen Nunn
I've birded for 25-30 years off and on. I started with a birding group in a fancy cemetery (Spring Grove) in Cincinnati and watching a kingfisher pound a fish on a tree branch for a half hour was fascinating. But it was in a Cincinnati city forest that I "became" a birder -- I was able to follow 2 pileated woodpeckers BY MYSELF for an hour and not scare them off. "I can do this!" was my internal shout and I was sunk. Here in Colorado I've birded with Boulder Bird Club and DFO since 1990. I haven't been diligent about becoming an expert, but now that I'm retired, I'm putting more time into it and will see how much improved I can become. I've birded in Costa Rica, Alaska, and Hawaii, in addition to all of the Lower 48.. I recommend them all.
I like to do mostly car birding with short forays. Or doing point observations like spending several hours at Bluff Lake. I like to find birds I don't have on my Life List, like the ptarmigan trip I led and the Band-tailed pigeon trip also. The trips were successful. But doing trips that just get out and about in beautiful places are very satisfying as well.
I'm doing the Colonial Bird Watch at Washington Park in Denver. It is interesting watching their behaviors and observing their arrival times to the colony and wondering when the first baby birds will arrive.
Right now I'm making efforts to learn and speak Spanish.
