As part of your registration, in order to participate in a Denver Field Ornithologists, Inc. This online registration system allows you to review and electronically sign the Agreement if you do not have one on file. If you would prefer to manually sign a printable version of the Agreement, you may access it here, and present it to the leader before trip start. If you choose this option, please contact your leader to assure you are signed up for the trip.
Please note: Each person, including each family member choosing to sign the Agreement electronically must login and have a separate account so that the agreement is tied to the individual. If you are having difficulty with multiple logins, please contact us for assistance. *Minors: If participant is a minor, the minor’s parent or legal guardian must print out, review and sign a paper copy of the Agreement and present it to the leader before the trip start. This trip has a focus of Chico Basin Ranch. The ranch is a major flyway for migratory birds, due to abundant springs, lakes, and other bird habitat, and is well known as one of the prime birding locations in the state. Over 330 species of birds—some rarely seen in Colorado—have been sighted on the ranch.
This is a Pueblo County & El Paso overnight trip staying at the Microtel motel in Fountain. Participants are responsbile for their own lodging and meals. There is some walking up to 2 miles on uneven ground throughoutta the day. It is possible we enjoy the Chico Ranch area both days as the migration is on & warblers, thrushes, sparrows, woodpeckers and flycatchers can literally drop in throughout the day. Hopefully, we will benefit from the Nature Conservancy bird banding!
Prepare for varying temps from cool mornings & warmer afternoon with layered clothing. We will stop at a gas station on the way down for additional food or restrooms opportunity. Bring the food you need throughout the trip and especially fluids! Staying hydrated makes for a better experience. Additionally, please bring an compact outdoor chair as we will be lunching & enjoy the ranch, Port a potty is available at the ranch and thats it at the Ranch. Sun & bugs should be on your radar for protection.
This is a fee area at $15 a day, either cash or check. It is a slower pace trip listening & looking. We will mutually agree on a dinner restaurant. The next morning, hopefully, the bird activity will warrant our return to Chico Basin Ranch, fee $15 & if it doesn’t we will adjust accordingly to Pueblo & El Paso County areas with an early start.
There is a .50 gas reimbursement divided by participants in the car to reimburse the driver. Approximately 250 miles round trip. We can leave cars overnight at Lowes however, meeting the driver elsewhere is preferable. We will collect at Lowes in Castle Rock for am depature to caravan. Register online or contact the leader.
