Trail Difficulty: Easy
Meet at parking strip on north side of Ferril Lake. Directions: Enter park from Colorado Blvd. Northbound turns left onto 22nd Ave. past Museum of Nature & Science; southbound turns right onto 22nd at police station. Go past museum parking until road curves toward zoo. Take immediate left at "To Pavilion Bandstand" sign and go 300 yards down to corner with tall spruce trees, where lake comes into view. Park diagonally on left beneath spruces.
Welcome back winter visitors to central Denver's urban bird oasis. Expect to see several kinds of ducks, Canada/Cackling/Greater White-fronted geese (and perhaps a hybrid or two), and songbirds (Townsend's Solitaire, nuthatches and creepers, Dark-eyed Juncos, Yellow-rumped Warblers, kinglets, bushtits). Plus, the usual resident gang of woodpeckers, jays, magpies and more. Dress for the weather, bring water and snacks, and expect to walk 3 miles of sidewalks and flat lawns and lakeshores. A scope or two helpful with shy waterfowl out on the lakes. Register online or contact the leader.
