Meet Your Trip Leader
First Creek at Denver Open Space
7:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Trail Difficulty: Moderate
From east Denver north of I-70, go east on 56th Avenue past Peoria and Chambers toward Peña Boulevard (airport highway). About 2 blocks before Peña, parking is on left (green sign, fenced lot). Or, take 1-70 to Peña Blvd. exit. Drive north toward airport and exit at 56th Ave. At bottom of ramp, turn left at stoplight and go west under Peña overpasses. Parking lot is 2 blocks ahead on right.
As fall migration ends, winter residents will have joined First Creek's year-round birds. Expect hawks and eagles, falcons, owls, Townsend's Solitaires and more. We'll walk Buckley Road's pavement and the open-space path along the creek upstream to Tower Road and back, checking First Creek's cottonwood groves and prairie dog town for raptors, woodpeckers and more. Time permitting, we'll also venture downstream along the First Creek Trail in Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR next door. Expect to walk 3-4 miles of mostly level road and trail. Dress for the weather and bring water and snacks. NOTE: No restrooms at this location, so "go before you go" at the King Soopers in nearby Green Valley Ranch (49th and Tower) or use the open space's "green door" woods and bushes north of the creek. Register online or contact the leader.
