First Creek at RM Arsenal

Trail Difficulty: Moderate
From East Denver take 56th Ave east toward Pena Blvd. First Creek parking lot is just before Pena on your left (north). Or take I-70 east to Pena Blvd. Drive north to 56th Ave Exit. Turn left at the light and at the bottom of the off ramp, pass under the highway and turn right, almost immediately, into the First Creek parking lot.
Details: With Labor Day's arrival, early autumn migration should bring stopover birds, and summer residents will be leaving. As always, hawks and other year-round residents should be abundant -- and maybe even an early Ferruginous Hawk. Flycatchers should still be about. Trip leaves from same parking lot as First Creek @ DEN Open Space (which we also will bird, time permitting). We'll scan the Arsenal fence line as we walk up Buckley Road and into the refuge at trailhead just across First Creek. Expect to walk 4 miles or so of level pavement and dirt trail on Adams and Denver sides. A reminder: No restrooms at this location, so "go before you go" at the King Soopers off Tower Road (1-1/2 miles SW). Dress for the weather and bring a hat, sunscreen, water and snacks. Register online or contact the leader.
