Trail Difficulty: Strenuous
Take U.S. Highway 285 south to Shaffers Crossing, about 6 miles west of Conifer. Turn north on Elk Creek Road and follow the signs 1.5 miles to the park entrance. State Parks pass or day pass required.
This trip is limited to the first 12 registrations.
Bring binoculars, water, hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, plenty of snacks and lunch, rain gear as needed, and sturdy hiking shoes. This is a strenuous hike with potential for short, steep inclines. We will hike 5 to 8 miles in total on several of the park's trails. Habitat can include ponderosa pine, aspen, mountain riparian, meadows, and cliffs. Species may include a variety of woodpeckers, thrushes, flycatchers, vireos, kinglets, nuthatches, and raptors as well as migrants. Our focus will be on observing bird behavior, analyzing field marks, and sounds. All levels of birders welcome. Register online or contact the leader.
