First Creek at Denver Open Space
6:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Trail Difficulty: Moderate
From east Denver north of I-70, go east on 56th Avenue past Peoria and Chambers toward Peña Boulevard (airport highway). About 2 blocks before Peña, parking is on left (green sign, fenced lot). Or, take 1-70 to Peña Blvd. exit. Drive north toward airport and exit at 56th Ave. At bottom of ramp, turn left at stoplight and go west under Peña overpasses. Parking lot is 2 blocks ahead on right.
Spring migration is ending, and the summer residents of First Creek's riparian-cottonwood-prairie habitat are settling in. We will walk 2.5 miles of paved path along the creek upstream to Tower Road and back. We'll also cover at least one-half mile of Buckley Road, which borders Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR. Time permitting, we'll dip into the Arsenal along the First Creek Trail for more species. We should see Swainson's and Red-tailed hawks and maybe Northern Harrier and Rough-legged Hawk, too, in addition to songbirds and year-rounders. Bring water, snacks and sun protection. NOTE: No restrooms at this location. Closest pre-trip pit stop is the King Soopers off Tower Road in Green Valley Ranch. Register online or contact the leader.
