First Creek at Denver Open Space

Trail Difficulty: Moderate
From east Denver north of I-70, go east on 56th Avenue past Peoria and Chambers toward Peña Boulevard (airport highway). About 2 blocks before Peña, parking is on left (green sign, fenced lot). Or, take 1-70 to Peña Blvd. exit. Drive north toward airport and exit at 56th Ave. At bottom of ramp, turn left at stoplight and go west under Peña overpasses. Parking lot is 2 blocks ahead on right.
Winter visits to First Creek sometimes provide surprises. There's almost always water in the creek, so a few waterfowl may join the usual crew of year-round birds and winter visitors, including plenty of raptors, some woodpeckers, a few Townsend's Solitaires and winter sparrows, among others. Time permitting, we'll also do the First Creek Trail in Rocky Mountain Arsenal across Buckley Road from the First Creek @ DEN trail. Expect to walk 4-5 miles on level trail and paved path. Dress for the weather and bring water, snacks, and sun protection. Important reminder: no restrooms at this location. The closest facilities (besides the "green door" in secluded trees and bushes onsite) are at the King Soopers on Tower Road near 49th in Green Valley Ranch. Register online or contact the leader.
